Cloud computing to assist Surveillance of Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Leishmaniasis Virtual Laboratory at Cloudscape VII, 9-10 March 2015, Brussels

A second demo from EU Brazil Cloud Connect will be presented at Cloudscape VII, 9-10 March 2015 Brussels.

EU Brazil Cloud Connect will showcase "Cloud computing to assist Surveillance of Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Leishmaniasis Virtual Laboratory in the frame of EU Brazil Cloud Connect".

Leishmaniasis is one of the world's most neglected diseases, affecting mainly very poor people in developing countries. It is caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus, and transmitted by an insect vector, the sand flies. Currently, the disease is spreading in previosuly endemic and to non-endemic areas due to three escalating risk factors: human-made and environmental changes; immune status (Leishmania/HIV co-infection); treatment failure and drug resistance.

The LVL aims at providing online tools for research in Leishmaniasis. Using cloud infrastructures, the LVL will foster the international cooperation to achieve a more effective control of the disease. In particular, through the integration of data from DNA sequence databases with climate and ecological indicators, as well as the design and publication of pipelines to perform the combined analysis of these data.
