This article has been submitted for the Pan-American Congress of Computational Mechanics, 27-29 april 2015. It presents a first version of an HPC-ready dimensionally heterogeneous cardiovascular coupled model developed in the contest of EUBrazil Cloud Connect project. Two codes are used to achieve this goal: Alya Red, the BSC in-house tool for biomechanical simulations; and a 55-artery reduced model of the highly detailed ADAN model (called ADAN55), from the LNCC hemodynamics simulation software.

This paper presents the preliminary results of a coupled simulation tool that widens the possibilities in cardiovascular modelling. A complete simulator of the cardiovascular system will allow bioengineers and medical researchers to study the response of the full model to changes in any of the components, extending the predictive and descriptive capabilities of the standalone versions of the models, and providing further insight in the cardiac-systemic interactions.

ECLAC, the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean, supports the development of public policies in the Region and can provide a regional, multi-sectorial overview of different issues. At Cloudscape Brazil ECLAC presented a diagnosis and recommendations regarding the development of cloud computing in the ECALAC region. A panel of international experts gave some insights and practical tips on privacy, security, contractual and data protection issues, which are bound to remain hot topics for both Brazil and Europe in the foreseeable future. Wilson Peres, Senior Economic Officer at the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), took part in the discussion presenting the ECLAC vision.

To keep up with a growing demand from it’s network of users RNP, the Brazilian NREN, (Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa), has turned to a hybrid, community and federated cloud to supply its services. The hybrid model allows RNP to act as a public (commercial) contract broker for “low risk” services, such as student e-mail, document sharing, etc. Through the community model, universities and research institutes can offer their own data centre infrastructure either fully or partially, to the national cloud. Besides this, RNP is comparing public/commercial cloud services, business models, pricing and contract clauses so that they can start a pilot which will assess the broker role, as planned for the hybrid model.
We spoke to José Luiz Ribeiro Filho, Director of Services and Solutions RNP to find out more about this choice.

Encouraged by the success of the Cloudscape Europe series, now in its seventh year, the EU Brazil Cloud Connect project rolled-out the first edition of Cloudscape Brazil, within the remit of EUBrazilCC on 20 October 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. High on the agenda was the ambition to shape cloud developments in both Brazil and Europe by bringing insights into current market trends, challenges slowing down mainstream adoption of cloud services and best practices to address them.
This 2 page report offers a snapshot of Cloudscape Brazil and the policy issues it explored. These issues include barriers that are slowing down the use of cloud services in Brazil, such as taxation, bandwidth, energy pricing and data protection, as well as the development of new applications.

Large companies have a key role to play in supporting innovation in the marketplace and increase uptake of cloud services. Indra, which operates in 138 countries, is one example of this. Its leadership in Spain and the Americas is particularly relevant to EUBrazilCloudConnect. Strengthening ties between the project and this global player can help turn assets from EUBrazilCloudConnect into new solutions benefitting different market sectors and regions with significant social impact.
This interview was done in November 2014, and we are now pleased to publish it.
